Watermelon Jelly
It’s been very hot these days. How about making watermelon jelly with your kids?
The round shaped jellies look lovely, and kids would sure love them.
The fresh and pleasantly cool watermelon jelly is a perfect dessert in summer.
Recipe for Watermelon Jelly
(Serving for 4 people)※yields approx. 2 ice cube molds
【Ingredients】
・ 400cc watermelon(juice)
・ 10g gelatin
・ 3tbsp sugar
【Directions】
(1) Puree the watermelon in a blender until smooth. When making it with a small child, it’s fun to mash the watermelon together. In that case, cut the seeded watermelon into bite-size pieces, put them in a Ziploc bag, and mash it together.
(2) Strain the watermelon liquid through a tea strainer or a sieve to remove fibers. Pour the juice into a pan and heat without boiling it.
(3) Remove from heat when the steam starts rising (about 80°C/176°F or so). Add gelatin and sugar slowly and stir well.
(4) Pour cooled mixture into an ice cube mold. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until set.
【Useful Tips】
If you boil the juice, the red components of watermelon float as the scum and the color of juice becomes transparent. Please be careful not to boil the juice. When a little bit of scum starts floating, it’s better to skim it off the top so you can make nice clear jelly. If you don’t have a round shaped ice cube mold, use a Tupperware or other container. When you share the jelly with a baby, adjust the amount of sugar and feed after mashing it well.
※Gelatin is suitable for infants older than the age of 12 months old or so. Please give little by little under supervision.
